I’ve been working on this one for a while. In fact the glasses have had to go back to the optician, so look out for ‘New specs #2’!

I was inspired by the way that Bottle Alley creates a continued series of framed views of the sea to produce this painting.

I’ve finally completed this painting. It’s inspired by watching people walking along the sea front in St Leonards on Sea.
This is an image I painted after attending a conversation between Basil Beattie and friend the art critic Mel Gooding at the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings
I have continued to reduce the amount of information in my portraits. This probably has the least so far.
Continuing in the theme of my last few paintings, I’m reducing the amount of information I put in may portrait and figure paintings. I’m using a thick impasto created with large brushes. They are painted on several canvases layered together. The outermost piece of canvas is cut out so the stretcher bars create the frame.
I’ve started to experiment using smaller canvases and bigger brushes. I want to find out how much information you need in a portrait.
