Continuing in the theme of my last few paintings, I’m reducing the amount of information I put in may portrait and figure paintings. I’m using a thick impasto created with large brushes. They are painted on several canvases layered together. The outermost piece of canvas is cut out so the stretcher bars create the frame.
The route to the studio along the seafront early this morning was really beautiful. I made some colour notes with the intention of making a full painting at home, but when I looked at it later I liked it the way it was.
I’ve started to experiment using smaller canvases and bigger brushes. I want to find out how much information you need in a portrait.
As part of the Coastal Currents festival, Ore Life Drawing was offering drop in portrait sessions. Here’s two paintings I made.
I’ve been a bit slow posting these, but here are a few paintings I made whilst in Belgium the other week.

On the way to hear Now and Then sing on Saturday the sea and sky were amazing. I was rushing so just had time to make a few colour notes and take a photo. Here’s the painting I made on my computer in the studio later.

Now and Then played a storming performance last night at The Stade, Hastings. 90 minutes with no break. Fab.
The sunset on Tuesday was so weird with all the sea mist.
